High Intensity Prismatic (HIP) Reflective Sheeting

What is High Intensity Prismatic (HIP) reflective sheeting?
HIP reflective sheeting (High Intensity Prismatic) is a widely used marketing grade name for prismatic films aimed at many permanent traffic-sign programs. HIP is not by itself a unique ASTM D4956 Type number.
Trade SKUs in this neighborhood often use a microprismatic optical structure. Structure describes how light returns; it does not replace a tested Type on the TDS or report for the ordered color.
Where is HIP sheeting typically used?
Catalogs commonly position HIP-class films for regulatory, warning, and general road traffic signs, and for programs that call mid-to-high prismatic performance—not only small commercial plaques.

Technical ground rules buyers should enforce
- ASTM D4956 Type is a tested performance classification. Do not infer Type only from glass-bead vs microprismatic structure. See structure vs ASTM Type and ASTM D4956 Types overview.
- Do not use Diamond Grade as a generic sheeting category on this site — it is a 3M trademark family, not a free Type name.
- If an RFQ cites EN 12899-1 classes such as RA1/RA2, state the standard context and attach SKU evidence. Class labels alone are not documentation. See EN 12899-1 RA classes.
- Print compatibility and outdoor durability are per SKU / per color, never a category-level guarantee from the marketing grade title alone.
- Final Type for any purchasable roll follows its test report, not the marketing grade title.
Packaging and export logistics (confirm on PI)
Export buyers typically price freight from net weight, gross weight, carton size, and approximate container loading. Industry HIP SKU pages expose those as separate rows; our card keeps the field pattern and leaves measured values to the PI.
Before booking freight:
- Confirm weight, carton, and container loading on the PI / packing list
- Confirm packing (roll/carton, core, pallet)
- Slit widths, sheets, and plotter-cut panels are converting options — ask in the RFQ, do not assume stock

How to RFQ this grade
Send a single message that includes:
- Marketing grade or required ASTM Type (and EN/local class if any)
- Colors and face geometry needs
- Roll size (metric and/or 24/36/48 in × 50 yd)
- Quantity and destination port
- Print or converting process (screen, UV digital, plotter, etc.)
- Substrate / application notes
- Whether you need a sample + TDS package
