Reflective Sheeting for North America: ASTM D4956 and MUTCD
Supplying reflective sheeting into the US and Canada: how ASTM D4956 Types map to sign programs, MUTCD context, common roll sizes, and what to confirm before RFQ.
What do North American buyers specify?
US and Canadian sign programs are built around ASTM D4956 performance Types. The MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) frames how agencies maintain minimum retroreflectivity — it drives replacement cycles and therefore steady replacement demand for sheeting.
Which grades serve which program (demo map)
| Program | Common starting point | Verify before RFQ |
|---|---|---|
| Regulatory / warning signs | HIP sheeting | Type III/IV family per SKU TDS |
| Higher-performance permanent signs | Microprismatic traffic | Type IV/VIII/IX/XI per report |
| Long approach / overhead guide signs | Long-distance films | Type VIII–XI candidates |
| Temporary traffic control | Work zone sheeting | Orange colorways, removable options |
Practical import notes
- Roll goods: 1220 mm × 45.7 m master rolls, or 24/36/48 in × 50 yd — both conventions appear in US RFQs.
- Vehicle conspicuity (DOT C2) is a different product family (vehicle tape, e.g. ECE 104 / DOT C2 rated) — not covered by this traffic-sign catalog.
- State DOT approved-products lists (APLs) may apply for agency work; private/commercial signage is less restricted.
